Eating healthy while you’re traveling may be one of the hardest things to do.
There are so many temptations lurking about and it’s also tempting to have your diet take a vacation as well.
I’ve traveled quite a bit and have been in airports and resorts that have tons of options, while others have very slim pickins’.
I’ve figured out, sometimes the hard way, the top ways to stay on top of your healthy eating goals while traveling.
Recently I just got back from Spain. I was there celebrating my wedding anniversary!
The people were charming, the food was abundant and the wine was flowing.
Sometimes the food was so good that I didn’t take the picture in time…
Other times it was SO good that I got mad when someone aka the hubster tried to snap a pic of me…
I spent most of the time living in the moment, teetering down cobblestone roads and marveling at all the beauty around me.
Luckily staying active was easy because I walked everywhere. This is probably the best way to squeeze in exercise while you’re traveling. Take the time to really explore your surroundings. Skip the cab and walk around instead.
You’ll have a much better experience and memories which will make for great stories to tell friends and family when you get back.
It will also allow you to see the country that you’re visiting in a way that you won’t be able to whizzing around in a taxi.
As a bonus you’ll save money and then you can spend it on food 🙂
And you’ll find more places to stop and take photos…
My favourite part had to be visiting the La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. Designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi, construction for La Sagrada Familia began in 1882.
Antoni Gaudi was a visionary. He dedicated over 40 years to building this masterpiece.
He was inspired by his love nature which he incorporated into every corner of this stunning church.
It’s been over 100 years in the making and still not finished.
Gaudí based his buildings on a simple premise: ‘If nature is the work of God, and if architectural forms are derived from nature, then the best way to honor God is to design buildings based on his work.’
There’s something to be said for taking time to reach your goals.
If you need help with sticking to those goals while traveling today I’m going to share 3 simple tips for eating healthy while you’re traveling:
Check out the video if you want to cut to the chase!
1. Plan Ahead
Break out that Ziplock bag and carry a stash of your favourite nuts and seeds to munch on while you’re busy scurrying around collecting stamps on your passport. The bonus is – you’ll save money too!
My choice for the perfect on the go snack is Central Roast’s Raw Goji Energy Mix.
You heard it here first Central Roast is going to be leading the healthy snacking revolution!
All Central Roast snacks are made with natural ingredients to satisfy any craving while you’re busy on the go. These are snacks that are BIG on flavour and that you can actually feel good about eating.
Goji Berries are the most nutritionally dense fruit on Earth.
If you’ve never eaten them before to quote Central Roast from their website:
‘The taste?‘ Raisin with a lemon twist!! A natural tinge of sweetness with a very slight herb-like aftertaste.’
This is the perfect description of what they actually taste like.
Why do you want to eat Goji Berries?
- For starters they’re loaded with Vitamin C. Keeping your immune system strong while travelling is essential to warding off sickness.
- High in fiber which will help to keep you full while in between meals while you’re on the go.
- Trying to lose weight? Goji berries are the perfect weight loss food and help to reduce stress as well as boost your metabolism. I love that’s it’s a portion controlled snack which also makes it a great weight loss snack.
- They’re loaded with beta-carotene (a pigment found in plants and fruits) which helps promote healthy glowing skin (FYI Madonna has been eating them for years. Enough said!)
Traveling with healthy snacks will help you from diving face first into a cheeseburger if your flight gets delayed, if you have to do a stopover or you go a long time in between meals. It will also make it easier to make healthier choices when you’re not famished.
2. Take a Greens Powder with You
Making sure you get enough veggies is probably the last thing on your mind when you’re sipping on a Pina Colada so a good greens powder will help you get the much needed veggies you may be missing.
It will also help to boost your energy and immune system while on the road and may even help if you’re suffering from a hangover…because…well it happens to the best of us 🙂
3. Take a Multivitamin
A lack of routine during a vacation may mean that you’re not on your game and may be missing out on vital nutrients. A quality multivitamin will cover all the bases to make sure you stay healthy. If you’re like me you probably eat waaay more carbs while on vacation.
The thing is that wrong types of excessive carbs, like refined carbs [white bread, pasta, croissants, my personal weakness 🙂 ] can deplete your body’s B vitamins, so your multivitamin should make sure that you’re getting enough.
Doing just these 3 simple things will go a long way to make sure that you’re staying fit and on top of your health goals while you’re travelling.
