Apple cider vinegar has been used for ions from anything to household cleaners to cooking and has many health benefits. It contains upwards of 19 minerals like magnesium and calcium in addition to 93 other components essential to the body.

Now there’s a looot of talk about apple cider vinegar for weight loss.

So, can it help you to lose weight?

I got my two hands up standing on a chair as I yell – YES! Apple cider vinegar helps blocks fat formation and storage, detoxifies your body, burns belly fat AND boosts your metabolism.

So what is apple cider vinegar exactly?

With apple cider vinegar crushed apples work with yeast to ferment the sugars, turning them into alcohol. The alcohol is further fermented by adding bacteria which turns it into acetic acid the active ingredient in vinegar. Try to purchase organic if you can, I like Bragg’s because it has what’s called ‘mother strands’ of enzymes, proteins and friendly bacteria.

Apple cider vinegar with the mother is simply unfiltered, unpasteurized and unrefined apple cider vinegar. The ‘mother’ is thought to provide additional health benefits. It’s kinda like the SCOBY that you find when making kombucha. I like to think of it as similar to whole foods that are unrefined that offer more benefits that are lost when it they are processed, heated or filtered.

3 Weight Loss Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar

1.  Suppresses Appetite

A study (1) showed that acetic acid, a short-chain fatty acid and the active ingredient in apple cider vinegar, works to suppress the areas in your brain that control appetite, which can lead to reduced overeating. Excellent conditions for weight loss. My favourite part is that it can also help to manage cravings due to the acetic acid.

2.  Improves Metabolism

Another nod to acetic acid! In another study (2) when subjects [rats] were exposed to acetic acid, it was found that there was an increase of the little known enzyme, AMPK [Adenosine Monophosphate-Activated Protein Kinase, a mouthful, I know!] which can promote weight loss. AMPK influences how your cells process energy and plays a key role in determining your fat composition.

When AMPK was present it increased fat burning which can help to rev up your metabolism.

3.  Decreases Insulin Levels

Apple cider vinegar has also been shown to reduce fat storage and fat burning hormones in the body, which can help with fat burning. I talk about this in my weight loss program Metabolism on Fire but lower insulin levels encourage the breakdown of fat, which can then be used for energy.

Insulin is kind of like the maestro for your fat cells and either tells the body to store fat or use it as energy. Apple cider vinegar can be great for helping your body to release fat.

How Much Apple Cider Vinegar Should You Use for Weight Loss?

There’s studies that show that 2-3 tablespoons per day can help to achieve the results mentioned above, reduce your waistline and burn stubborn belly fat.

Here’s How to Get More Apple Cider Vinegar Daily

First of all, PLEASE DON’T for the love of Pete [whoever Pete is] drink apple cider vinegar straight – you should never do that as it can burn your esophagus. And your eyeballs just might pop out your sockets, and you should definitely keep your eyeballs because they’re important.

So what to do?

Add 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar and optional 1 teaspoon of honey to a glass of warm water and drink first thing in the morning about 20 minutes before breakfast for maximum benefits and to stimulate your digestive system.

I love this Spiced Apple Cider Vinegar drink first thing in the morning.

Spiced Apple Cider Vinegar Drink Recipe

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
1 teaspoon honey (ideally raw) or maple syrup
1 dash cayenne pepper
1 dash of cinnamon [optional, but tasty and also great for weight loss]
1.5 cups of warm or hot water

Add to glass or mason jar [my personal fav for drinking on the go] in order listed drink immediately or pop in the fridge to chill and then serve cold.

Add 1 tablespoon to your salad dressing for lunch. This mouthwatering roasted veggie quinoa salad has a delicious fat burning apple cider vinegar dressing recipe. It’s important that your salad also contain protein, fat, and fiber as well. This combo will also keep your blood sugar levels balanced which will help to avoid any food cravings you might have.

For dinner add it to a homemade marinade along with your favourite spices.

I will say that just because apple cider vinegar has weight loss benefits it doesn’t mean that it should be used as a quick fix all on its own. To really see results, be sure to use it in combination with a healthy diet and active lifestyle. Apple cider vinegar is just one of the fat burning foods that helped me to lose 30 lbs. I share this and many other weight loss accelerating foods in my Metabolism on Fire weight loss program.
